Yoga means “to unite”
Yoga is often translated as a discipline, which aims to create a harmony between body, mind and spirit. A union between the Individual Self and Universal Consciousness.
If you are familiar with the study of Samkhya philosophy you are aware of the fact that Life is Suffering. A Suffering which is caused by acquiring wrong knowledge through perceiving reality wrong.
The ultimate goal in Yoga practice is to change our course by walking towards the path of true consciousness, which as a result liberates us from this suffering.
HOW? – mainly through the practice of Asana (yogic poses), Pranayama (breath control) and Meditation enabling us to access our supreme intellect which provides us with the capacity to avoid the acquisition of wrong knowledge.

Beyond Union
Speaking for myself I have more and more the feeling that this Union of Body, Mind & Spirit might be rather an advertising sign to attract people to practice Yoga. Instead there is so much more .
I have been practicing Yoga for over 20 years now and got to the conclusion, that this Union which is proclaimed to be the ultimate goal in Yoga is just a kind of portal, an entrance to a much bigger transformation which takes place afterwards.
After we allow ourselves to go beyond this portal called “Union of Body, Mind and Spirit”.
Hidden Inside
I believe as long as you are anxious to achieve this Union, you are very much trapped to your thinking mind, which is said to make up only 10 % of your brain capacity.
I am convinced when you indulge yourself to fearlessly go beyond this Union, when you truly seek a way out, a kind of salvation you will be able to access the other 90 % hidden inside of you. The hidden supreme intellect (buddhi) that has the capacity to distinguish what is good for us and what is not and change course.
If you meditate on a regular basis I am sure you may have had already a glimpse of these 90 % while you were in sitting meditation.
It´s as if you access to a knowledge that is beyond you can explain in words.
It is crystal clear, without any judgement, untouched the way it is transmitted and yet so true and meaningful. You don´t know where it comes from, but one thing is for sure it is from very deep Inside of you.

The Real Meaning of Yoga
When it comes to the true meaning of Yoga I come to the decision that it is all about “Transformation” rather than “Union”.
How I feel the saying : “Yoga means uniting Body, Mind & Spirit” is nothing but a very good Slogan ; something that invites people to try out a yoga practice, which is perfectly fine. Don´t get me wrong but it is just one part of the story.
But the real meaning and secret that lies within the word YOGA is the one of Deep Transformation, a Transformation from deep inside of you which takes place after Yoga has united ;-).
Why not end suffering?
If everyone is given the opportunity through yoga to transform, to go beyond and to get access to that supreme discriminating knowledge, why don´t you?
My personal guess : ….because it is a one way ticket with no return;-)
Supreme knowledge, the one that comes in play when you allow to transform, demands you to take over responsibility for yourself, for your actions or non-actions and for your speeches. There is no one who bears the responsibility but YOU.
It is YOUR path, YOUR transformation, YOUR knowledge based on YOUR Truth, YOUR Demons to face.
Living and Walking in YOUR Truth is an every day challenge. It can be a very lonely path. You are constantly triggered by your emotions and by your environment. Relationships might break up, daily life situations might interfere seriously more.
As soon as you take one step beyond you get a glimpse of what awaits you and sometimes it is just too much for you to take. Time has not yet come for you to truly go beyond the portal of true transformation. And that is perfectly fine. Don´t judge yourself. It will come.
Keep on moving forward,Walk in your Truth.
Love Sandra
